Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT). This is the first time that I’m spending this today abroad as an out queer woman. I’m in a country that was the third in the world recognize the right to change one’s gender but still does not offer gay marriage. Overall Italy is a place I’ve always found safe to be myself but as a queer person who travels often, navigating where I can and where I cannot safely be out (both in the US and aboard) is a constant balancing act. There are currently 70 countries where it’s illegal to be LGBTQ and 12 countries where same sex consensual sex is punishable by death. In the US, 2022 is set to break the record for the most bill targeting transgender youth in a single year. So today, we raise awareness that LGBTQ+ safety is never guaranteed especially for those most vulnerable in our community.
