Growing up, I was pretty sheltered and stayed close to home. These days, I pass by areas of central Phoenix and remember visiting as a child thinking to myself how far away I was from home. If it wasn’t in South Phoenix it was “far.” It was actively impressed upon me early in life the “other”-ness of where I grew up, where I called home, and how I must be a reflection of that.
