Q: What is your history with Fort Greene Park? Why do you love it?
I spend as much time as possible each week in Fort Greene Park and I have for more than a decade. The hawks, woodpeckers and pine warblers make it a real nature retreat. While I visit Central Park and Prospect Park each week, Fort Greene is a true neighborhood park. I love that I run into friends and neighbors every time I visit!
Q: How and why did you become involved with Fort Green Park Conservancy?
When my daughter was young, we started gardening in the park with Daly Clement, a conservancy board member who helped restore the park’s Revolutionary Garden. It was a good way to get our hands dirty and grow our relationship with the park. I found myself volunteering whenever I could to make sure other families and neighbors could have that kind of experience. But it was the conservancy’s response to the BLM movement in 2020, its work toward equity in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, that inspired me to get more involved.
Q: Share a glimpse of your vision for the Conservancy in the near and long term.
I’ll always feel grateful for the countless hours of labor and planning that go into making the park both a refuge for wildlife and a place for people to play, rejuvenate and rest. We’re all benefactors of the park’s designers, Vaux and Olmstead, who back in the 1840s sought to strike that balance. I'm hoping the work we do today for the park and its neighboring communities will help sustain it for another few centuries.
