CROWN HEIGHTS RIOT: in the summer of ‘91, less than a year after my mother’s death, I was in my early teens. Rakim, Public Enemy, MC Lyte and Shabba were living giants. I don’t think I had a solid grasp on race relations or class in America and how it would shape my creative lense. My sisters and I lost the fight to stay in Brooklyn when waves of Caribbean families left Brooklyn for backyards in Queens and Long Island. We did win the couch battle and convinced my grandmother to not put plastic on the new couch set, but it meant we couldn’t sit on it without her mean mugging us. -Ouigi Theodore Photographer: @josephrobertkrauss CD: Ouigi Theodore Talent: @salomebrown @salomebrown Styling: Ouigi + @_stevegonzalez_ Production: @yoo_malik Hat: BKc cotton Thinkers cap Mesh tank: @scottfrasercollection Pants: @jouez_les_enfants Footwear: @clarksoriginals
