Oh heavens, I’ve just read the most sweepingly judgemental piece of writing in the Guardian of all places! Here’s the link to it https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/aug/29/five-wedding-outfits-for-just-29-my-cheap-ethical-joy-filled-wedding if you’re interesting in reading it. Now, I don’t often make posts like this but this really was a difficult read especially when the writer described the average UK wedding as a “bank-breaking, planet-wreaking affair.” Weddings come in all shapes, sizes and budgets and the writer of the article had a wonderful wedding on a micro budget that was perfect for her. But to judge someone else’s wedding and the talented people who work in the industry in such negative ways is pretty awful. It’s vital to me that my work and business is as ‘ethical’ as it can possibly be and by that I mean I know where every bead I use comes from, all my metals are recycled as is my packaging. My tools are processes are ‘old fashioned’ and I make everything by hand. I don’t use any chemicals or plastics and I care an enormous amount about every single thing that I make and do and every single woman who I work with and for. I know some of the most incredible women in this industry who care so much about their clients and their product/service and who are kind, caring and supportive to each other. We offer an alternative to mass production and we are trying very hard to keep traditional skills alive that have been lost to machines and terrible working practices. We’re not for everyone and nor could or should we be but to read an article like this is pretty depressing. I’d love to know what any of you who have read this article think? It’s a controversial piece of journalism and, as I previously mentioned, I think it’s wonderful that the writer created her perfect wedding at very little expense but, my issue lies with the sweeping, judgemental labelling as the wedding industry as something so negative. @lovemydress have also written a very measured post about this article so it is a conversation worth having.
