All my heroes are failures. In a world obsessed with hagiography and pedestals, with recuperative counternarratives, where we rewrite ourselves as super humans, I get so much more from the failures. From the saints and the prophets who were swallowed by the whale and never left. Nat Turner, after his visions in the corn field, after the revolution that wasn't, was dismembered and they rendered his body into soap. Nongqwuse being dressed up for a photograph by a white woman displaying "her" prophet. Hong Xiuquan's ashes blasted from a cannon in Nanjing. The multiple deaths these prophets endured- a lasting testimony to their influence.
Here is some new work. Tapestries, stained glass, Nat Turner's head rendered in soap. Wovoka, Alice Lakwena, Te Ua Haumene
And a revisitation of Sarah Bonetta Forbes in a room size tapestry.
Come see.
