Today, I feel so alienated, so heartbroken, alongside so many in marginalized communities who are feeling this same devastation. This election has revealed something I never wanted to see—that so many have chosen to ignore, or even embrace, values rooted in violence, hate, and disregard for others. As a gay woman, this result is more than disappointing; it’s terrifying. Knowing that people in my own community, people I once trusted, voted for someone who views my rights, my love, my very existence as undeserving of protection—it feels like a betrayal. It’s a painful reminder that some see me, and so many others, as less—as people whose safety and rights can be tossed aside. The choice people made at the polls isn’t just a political decision; it’s a personal wound. By casting a vote for a leader with a documented history of harm and prejudice, they empowered someone who stands against everything I am, everything I deserve, and everything so many of us have fought for. This isn’t just the loss of an election; it’s a loss of belonging and safety for so many. I feel a deep sadness knowing that some would willingly set back our progress, that they would vote to strip away rights, dignity, and security for countless individuals. But at least there’s a glimmer of hope. North Carolina showed up, and we can take pride in that. We not only defeated Mark Robinson and Michele Morrow, but we also elected strong leaders who give me hope: Josh Stein for Governor, Rachel Hunt for Lt. Governor, Jeff Jackson for Attorney General, Mo Green for Superintendent, and Elaine Marshall for Secretary of State. Together, we even broke the supermajority. North Carolina proved that there are still people fighting for a brighter, more inclusive future. To everyone who is hurting today, know that you’re not alone. Together, we’ll keep going, we’ll keep pushing, and we’ll build a future where love and equality triumph over hatred. One day, I hope we’ll find ourselves in a place where our rights and our humanity aren’t up for debate, because we’re not going back.
