LONG POST & SAD NEWS
We are sad to say that at the end of August, we will no longer be able to serve you a coffee when you visit OPEN. There are a lot of rumours around - so please read on for the whole story.
Ultimately, our 'business' is building exceptional surfboards. We never saw the front of the factory as a cafe; on average, we only serve 30 coffees a day. However, it's still an element of OPEN that we value. Through the simple act of serving coffee, we've been able to welcome people that might not ordinarily visit a surfboard factory. Over the last five years, we've met many amazing people, made the most wonderful friends and built a community that feels like home.
Everything we do is with the best intentions. No one is profiteering from OPEN (any profit would be nice 😂🤣ðŸ˜ðŸ¤£). We're proud to have been able to host incredible events, support local artists, and provide year-round jobs at the real living wage in an area that needs more year-round businesses.
Despite previously being comfortable with what we were doing, and for reasons outside of their control, Cornwall Council now have to hold us to the letter of our lease. As part of this situation, we have to say goodbye to our good friend Aaron (Fades & Waves), who has been our resident barber in the spray bay here at OPEN since the end of the lockdowns. Aaron has been an incredible addition to our space, a friendly face with infectious enthusiasm. We've become firm friends and regularly daydream about our plans to prop up the bar at OPEN long into retirement. The good news is that Aaron will still be providing trims somewhere locally - so watch this space for updates :)
Needless to say, we are heartbroken. We have to say goodbye to good friends and exceptional team members, and we're not yet sure what this news will mean for the future of OPEN.
It's a shit situation, but we want to stress that we want to take things forward in a positive way. It's easy at times like this to look for people to blame. Especially easy-targets like our landlord. But unfortunately, in this situation, their hands were tied.
Please read on in the comments...
