The BUGATTI brand has always profited from people with strong and innovative mindsets that dare to buck trends and trail-blaze new ideas, designs and technologies. Ettore Bugatti was one such person. And so too is Romano Artioli, who turns 90 years old today.
A passionate BUGATTI fan since boyhood, Artioli bought the BUGATTI rights in 1987 and revived the brand in 1991, the same year of Ettore Bugatti’s 100th birthday. He celebrated both milestones by presenting the best and fastest super sports car in the world. The EB 110 featured the first series-produced carbon chassis, all-wheel drive, four turbochargers and a 3.5-liter V12 engine with five valves per cylinder delivering a power output of 560 PS and top speed of 351 km/h.
In total, 96 EB110 GT and 32 EB110 SS models were built over a period of four years at the world’s most modern car production plant in Campogalliano, in Northern Italy. Fondly called ‘La Fabbrica Blu,’ the 240,000 sqm base incorporated an administrative building, design studio, engine and test development area, production halls, test track and a stylish canteen. La Fabbrica Blu was adorned with the EB brand – even the canteen’s china proudly featured the lettering.
While Artioli beat his competitors in creating the EB 110, he was not able to withstand the global economic recession of the time, and so the factory closed its doors in 1995. Today, on his 90th birthday, Artioli, who put all his heart and soul into the EB110 is grateful seeing how his brainchild is appreciated by collectors around the world, with the super sports car achieving record prices in excess of $3million at auctions.
