Repost @shonibarestudio: Opening Sunday at The Tetley in Leeds is the exhibition 'Hibiscus Rising: Creating a memorial for David Oluwale with Yinka Shonibare CBE’.
The show centres around a maquette created by @shonibarestudio as part of a proposal for a public memorial for David Oluwale, a British Nigerian who drowned in the River Aire on 18 April 1969 after systematic harassment by police in Leeds. The proposed artwork, 'Hibiscus Rising', will stand at 9.5 metres high and be located in Leeds’ Southbank next to the Oluwale footbridge on Meadow Lane.
The project is a collaboration between The Tetley, The David Oluwale Memorial Association and LEEDS 2023 Year of Culture and imagines the future of David Oluwale’s legacy.
The exhibition will run from 11 September 2022 - 8 January 2023 with a special opening on Sunday 11 September from 3–7pm. To find out more and to book a free ticket, visit thetetley.org
