In the 1960s and 1970s my Mom (and Dad) marched, rallied, picketed and fought like hell to make abortion legal—which finally became law in 1973, saving countless lives and giving women autonomy over their bodies.
My family marched again in 2004, in The March For Women’s Lives, to protect this right and for better
health care for ALL women, no matter their race, education or economic circumstance.
Now the Supreme Court is about to take away this fundamental right: A woman’s right to choose whether to carry an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy to term, or to legally and safely terminate her pregnancy.
And not just a woman’s right.
For more than twenty years I’ve worked to improve the rights and treatment of child victims of rape and sexual assault.
When a 12 year old girl is raped by her stepfather (or anybody for that matter) and becomes pregnant, what should she do? Become a Mother?
Shouldn’t it be HER choice—not the government’s—to decide whether her entire life is further derailed by that rapist?
And if she chooses to terminate the pregnancy (for most, a relentless traumatizing reminder of her rape) shouldn’t she be able to do so SAFELY, without risking her life or endangering her ability to have children with a loving partner in the future?
The majority of the country does not want Roe v. Wade struck down.
Men: For the sake of our mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, friends and colleagues—speak up.
Use your voice to protect a woman’s—and a girl’s—right to choose.
