This year, we have had the pleasure and privilege of partnering with Music Moves Chicago (@musicmoveschi), the community arm of the Old Town School of Folk Music (@oldtownschool) to offer free classes, from West African and Afro-Cuban dance to drumming and Capoeira, at Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative. We extend a heartfelt thanks to Arif Smith whose artistic investments in diasporic music and movement practices brought an interesting suite of workshops to our studio space in Greater Grand Crossing. — Since 2011, Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative, a 32-unit affordable housing community steps away from the Stony Island Arts Bank, has offered artists and community members space for rehearsals, access to arts education, direct connection to practicing creatives and a haven for fostering neighborhood dialogue and collaboration. DA+HC has been celebrated nationally for its innovative partnership structure, convening a number of stakeholders like artist and Rebuild founder Theaster Gates, Chicago Housing Authority, Brinshore Development, and Landon Bone Baker Architects around a common goal of cultivating local assets that tackle housing instability and access to cultural spaces. Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative (DA+HC) has been a creative refuge complete with a spring-loaded dance studio floor, as well as a public meeting spac e and adjacent community garden, for our neighbors in the Greater Grand Crossing area.
