Photo by @daisygilardini / Arctic foxes are burrow dwellers. They occupy and sometimes share space in burrows that have been dug by other animals.
They breed once a year and can give birth to as many as 15-20 little dark pups in a single litter, but many of those die in their first year of life.
Pups emerge from their maternity den at around three weeks of age.
I photographed this three-month-old Arctic fox in Svalbard in July, at the height of the northern summer, around the time they start wandering away from the den to hunt by themselves.
