Rashaun Rucker Never Free to Rest September 24th thru October 29th, 2022 We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome Detroit-based artist Rashaun Rucker to LA for his first solo show here this Fall!! Pictured: Rashaun Rucker I Left At First Light Graphite on Stonehenge 250gsm paper 52 x 42 inches 2021 Framed “Never Free To Rest” compares the life and origins of the rock pigeon to the stereotypes and myths of the constructed identities of Black men in the United States of America. The title of the show is drawn from a quotation by James Baldwin: “In America, I was free only in battle, never free to rest - and he who finds no way to rest cannot long survive the battle.” “Never Free to Rest” was originally created in 2021 for the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities Gallery as part of High Stakes Art, a multi-year project featuring exhibitions as sites of social and political engagement, funded by the Andrew W Mellon Foundation. The show was also exhibited at the Art League Houston in 2022 before traveling to CJG in LA. Rashaun Rucker (b. 1978, Winston-Salem, NC) is a product of North Carolina Central University and Marygrove College. He makes photographs, prints and drawings and has won more than 40 national and state awards for his work. In 2008 Rucker became the first African American to be named Michigan Press Photographer of the Year. He also won a national Emmy Award in 2008 for documentary photography on the pit bull culture in Detroit.
