In case you were wondering whether baby T never ate the sensory bases, participates in activities for ages and did things as I had shown him, he doesn’t!
I think it’s really important to share that narrative lest we start to think that ‘the perfect activity’ is the norm.
✨ T will sample and mouth lots of sensory materials. This tapered off at about 12 months. My daughter (4) is also still prone to taste testing! 🫣 I always say, offer it if you are comfortable with them putting it in their mouth under your supervision.
✨ Babies and children are also still very much learning about the world and building up pattern of knowledge. This knowledge is constructed - in part - by their own experimentation and is to be expected.
✨ Finally, advice on concentration differs and I’ve heard every formula as a teacher. I don’t like to be guided by a formula because concentration depends on the activity and the child. I’ve seen T flit between activities at 30s a piece or spend 20 minutes focusing. For me, the key is managing my expectations to where I don’t assume it will be the same every time.
How do you manage these expectations?
