welcome to new york.......i am waiting for YOU actually! 🤪 #Wheelchair #Accessibility #Ableism #Disability descriptive transcript: clips of me, a white woman with red hair in a small black wheelchair with rainbow spokes, and establishments in new york city. i narrate the clips as text on screen displays an emoji rating. i say, “it's Disability Pride Month and accessibility legislation has been in place for 34 years, so let's see if businesses in New York City have used those 34 years to make their establishments wheelchair accessible. spoiler alert, they haven't. starting off with the museum of sex, [one thumbs down] they asked if I quote "wanted" the elevator and then I had to wait for someone to escort me out the building and around the side to get to it. about half of the exhibits and only 3 out of 13 of the attractions they had were wheelchair accessible. do you think I paid for 3/13th of a ticket? no. I paid for an Uber to come to popup bagels [five thumbs down] and the employee told me that wheelchair accessibility had "never come up." he said "oh, bummer, we should think about that shouldn't we?" so we went to their clearly more popular competitor next door [leon’s bagels, three thumbs up] and 10/10 would recommend. the employees at the entrance of the museum of ice cream [three thumbs down] were SO rude and unhelpful and same thing — I paid full price for a ticket but half of their things were not accessible. you think anybody mentioned that before I went? no. not only is never fully dressed [four thumbs down] inaccessible, which is not inclusive by the way, but they were so rude about not having a ramp. [white text on screen with never fully dressed reads “shoutout to the customer inside who dropped her things and told them they should be ashamed of themselves and left (heart)”] ink & alloy [two thumbs down] put this 'ring bell for assistance' in a place where it can't be reached by a wheelchair user, so my friend went inside and asked if they had a ramp and they brought it out and asked me if I could set it up for them. I ended up having to leave because they couldn't unfold it. hey harper [three thumbs down] has the same thing. clearly no one was thinking of wheelchair users when putting up this wheelchair sign. I've actually seen the owner of the march hare [three thumbs down] on TikTok and I've been wanting to go to the store for about a year but I saw on google maps that they have stairs. and we called and not even in a nice way, they said, nope! I'm sure I would have loved colorful Natalie [two thumbs down] if I would have been able to go inside but of course, giant step and no ramp. this is eye level for a wheelchair user at the Brooklyn Charm popup [one thumb down]. because of how inaccessible this was, it was so hard for me to make a bracelet, and it shouldn't have been. it took about 10 minutes for the employees at the Ace Hotel [one thumb down] to remember that they have this accessible entrance. the first day i went it was filled with trash, and the second time, this lift was broken. when I found out the lift was broken is when i learned about this door that was very scary and led to an even scarier ramp. I'm sure it's hard for non-chair users to recognize but l literally had to be held going down this ramp because of how steep it was. and then of course, the door at the bottom was not accessible. so it's safe to say that after 34 years, abled people are still disappointing us.
