Introducing, "Awaking Bear!" Let's just say that the bear (Sleeping Bear Dunes) wasn't sleeping on this insane night. 🐻💤
.
On Sunday night, September 4th, 2022, I was planning on leaving late to get up to St.Ignace for the Labor Day Bridge Walk. My goal was to take a time-lapse of the entire walk from the lookout at the Straits State Park (coming soon). Before I left, I saw that the Aurora had a good chance of being out, so I decided to head to my favorite spot on the Empire Bluff Trail, even though it was going to take me an additional two hours of driving that night.
.
After walking the mile-long Empire Bluff Trail in the dark, I got to my spot and began setting up. With the naked eye, I could see a faint glow above the dunes. I began taking a time-lapse with one camera and taking photos with another camera.
.
At around 11pm, the Sleeping Bear Dunes woke up and put on the most incredible show for almost an hour. I sounded like a broken record player, as I was saying, "OH MY GOSH!", every few seconds as the Aurora was so vivid, the pillars were so tall, and the sky was literally dancing as I have never seen before.
.
At around 11:30, the top of the sky was welcomed with what scientists call STEVE, known as a Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, which is different than just the Northern Lights, and a lot more rare. A STEVE will appear as a picket fence and be tall columns of green light high in the sky, as opposed to an Aurora which is shimmering ribbons of light. Many people chase the Aurora over their lifetime, and will rarely get to see a STEVE.
.
As Sleeping Bear went back to sleep, I walked back to my car thanking God for the beauty He has created, and that I was lucky enough to capture it.
Psalms 19:1 - "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork."
