#BlackoutTuesday. Sometimes when one thing breaks, everything does. All the hidden parts become exposed. And the only way forward is to look. A global pandemic separated us, tested our economies, and highlighted the disparities that have long plagued us. In health. In justice. In survival. Still quarantined, recovering from coronavirus myself, I’m tired and in pain, but I know that’s what it takes to get better. Although separated, I remain united with my community fighting for a more equal world. Years ago, the last words my dad spoke to me were through labored breaths—on oxygen after developing an avoidable condition. His doctor, perhaps in a rush, had prescribed such an excess of medication that his lungs filled with fluid. At times like this, I wonder, would his doctor have been more careful, more attentive if he weren’t a black man? How many more years could I have had with him? Unconscious biases permeate everywhere in society, and we all must do our part to address them. We will never get better if we continue to ignore and hide these realities, to let people die gasping for breath. #justiceforgeorgefloyd
