Something that’s been absolutely frustrating and really quite sad to me, that I’ve seen popping up in culture lately, has been what I guess I’ll sum up as the “dump him” phenomenon. This generalized idea that all men are bad, and that white cis men in particular are all monsters who should keep their mouths shut. The fact that our whole society was largely built on, and continues to stand on, the shoulders of men; (the working class man- to be perfectly clear) has been completely disregarded. What of the lives that have been lost or forever altered by wars, or the grunt work that keeps our grocery stores filled and the lights of our homes on? A new therapist asked me a series of questions and one of them was “men are blank.” When I said “wonderful.” She laughed. “That’s good, a lot of women say “men are shitty.””
And letmetellyou it’s not because I haven’t been deeply hurt by men because of masculine wounding. I’m also not saying that there isn’t obscene unfairness, that there aren’t deeply wounded men out there hurting others.
But I don’t for a second believe that the men of our society are any more troubled than the women. We are silencing good, kind, intelligent, men in an attempt to instigate change.
Masculinity and femininity need each other. Regardless of gender, these qualities nurture and allow for the deepest kinds of growth. We should be listening to each other , allowing for differences, and more than anything else ♥️respecting♥️ each other. I challenge you to be curious about the generalizations you make with your speech because our words impact our psyche and our collective consciousness.
