❤️🔥WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL TRAINING?❤️🔥
Functional training ensures that you have adequate joint mobility (strength & flexibility), quality, strength, power. & cardiovascular fitness etc. to meet the demands of fitness and life.
Functional training will help athletes not only improve performance, but reduce likelihood of suffering injury. For non-athletes, functional training will help improve people’s ability to function in their everyday life and profession for e.g. carrying groceries, bending over to pick something.
Functional training is not an exclusive or ‘special’ type of training (cough cough Orange Theory/F45/CrossFit 👀) but it is an INTENTIONAL and PURPOSEFUL way of training that aims to restore movement quality, improve performance and reduce likelihood of injury.
An athlete that is strong but lacks mobility will be at risk of muscle strain and joint damage. On the other hand, an athlete that is extremely mobile or flexible, but lacks strength, will also be at risk of injury as they lack the ability to produce adequate levels of force.
❤️🔥 So HOW can you incorporate functional training into your program? ❤️🔥
- Incorporate mobility training to optimise and increase range of motion, joint health & tissue extensibility
- Incorporate movement preparation drills or general physical preparedness
- Incorporate unilateral, bi-lateral or multi-directional power exercises to develop deceleration skills and power expression
- Incorporate full-body strength exercises that address knee-dominant, hip-dominant, pushing, pulling and core strengthening movement patterns and challenges the strength and stability of the body in multiple movement planes
