It was nearly 10 years ago, but I’ll never forget this. I was meeting with one of my very first pro athlete clients. He mentioned being given a meal plan by someone. When I asked if he found it helpful or how long he’s been following it for, he said he threw it in the trash right after leaving their office.🫣🗑 We’ve seen a LOT of really bad meal plans over the years. Here’s 3 reasons why we won’t “just make you a meal plan”👇🏽👇🏽 1️⃣They don’t teach you anything about nutrition. Generic meal plans don’t provide any education on the foods or portions recommended, making it hard to translate to other foods/meals not on the plan. This leaves you with limited options on repeat. We provide our clients with the education to select better meal & snack compositions, incorporate foods containing nutrients they may be lacking, & how to reduce foods they may be consuming too much of. 2️⃣They aren’t individualized. Let’s say a person goes online & finds a 1800-calorie meal plan they can follow. Is that actually how many calories they should be eating? Did they even like the foods listed? Were they cooking all the time? Were they eating the same thing for every single meal? Many factors should be considered when developing a nutrition plan, and the plans you find online are not individualized to your goals, likes/dislikes, dietary preferences, budget, schedule, etc. 3️⃣They’re not realistic. Generic plans are often very rigid & inflexible, making it impossible if you’re constantly traveling/on the road. They also don’t teach you the skills necessary to make better choices when things don’t go as planned. These skills are critical to implementing lifelong nutrition habits. We’ve seen time & time again that a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition doesn’t work. Meal plans CAN be a helpful tool, but only once the person is taken into consideration before the plan is developed.
