Guess we’ll just have to wait thousands of years to find out.
Weathering and erosion help shape the geologic landscape of the park. Weathering breaks down and sculpts the rocks. Erosion then transports the rocks, sediments, and sand away, and exposes new layers underneath. The hollowed-out features of skull rock are natural rock cavities known as tafoni (rhymes with macaroni). These are caused by cavernous weathering and are common to see in Joshua Tree’s granite.
If visiting Skull Rock, please make sure to park completely off the road. Watch out for deep sand and don't park on the vegetation. For the safety of you and passing vehicles, walk on the side of the road and not in the road. Look first before using the crosswalk; no zombie walking 🧟♀️
