This project really means a lot to me @aforestla. We just opened a week ago & it’s been crazy ♥️ Everyone involved has been working working. Anyone who makes/creates anything knows — production knows 🙄 but before the fabrication began, before sound crews and Instagram ads — there was a lot of dreams. AND I had a goal. I hoped to use this platform to generate conversation and hopefully investment in the absolute brilliance of native people. Well, period but particularly how we’d save y’all ass from climate change. All the phases of this project have been wild, each better than the last but as we figure out all the nitty gritty, I want to take a moment to remember the intention. These photos are from our studio @gkstudio visit to The Karuk lands. We are addressing one of the single largest climate change issues in California— Wildfires. Who better to learn how to address these issues than the Native People who steward this land since the beginning!? Tribal burning is finally beginning to be recognized as a component of the ecosystem and a restoration technique. Which is crazy since the folks from here been like “hey! You doing it wrong” since the weeks act was passed in 1911. Karuk fire regimes generate what is known as "pyrodiversity"—the biodiversity consequences of fire management—on the landscape by extending the burning season and shortening the intervals of fire return. All this to say, you wanna learn how to fight fire? It sure the hell ain’t from Smokey but @billatripp , the Executive Director of the DNR for the Karuk Tribe can send you in the right direction. The multitude of foods, materials, and other products that come from Karuk lands are just a tiny bit of the evidence of the profound diversity of fire regimes that are required to maintain relationships with hundreds of animal, plant, and mushroom species. Thank you @billatripp @alorasutcliffe for teaching us. Being amazing human beings. Introducing us to your families and allowing us to share a glimmer of the insane amount of work you put in to restore fire to this land.
