The proudest I’ve felt to be Indian in more recent years was when I went to the anti-CAA and NRC protests, from Jamia to Shaheen Bagh in Delhi. It was early 2020. We marched with friends, alongside strangers. People of every background - from religion, caste, gender, socio-economic, and more - came together for each other. This must have been what India felt like 75 and more years ago - people coming together to seek justice against an oppressor. Bearing witness, albeit digitally and overseas, to the incredible dedication and determination of Sikh farmers who fought for their rights for over a year, is another such example. The work of Khabar Lahariya, India Cable, The Wire to numerous organizations, media and otherwise, to highlight issues from gang rape to corruption, is the pulse of free speech. This morning, as a flag is hoisted at the Red Fort with claims about India’s diversity being a strength, numerous activists and journalists are still in jail. Doesn’t diversity of opinion count for something, in a supposed democracy? Today, @peninternational launches India At 75, bringing over 100 Indian/diaspora writers to write short texts on their feelings of India past, present and future. It’s been an honor to be included in this company, with many opinionated friends. And with that, our bravest friend @salman.rushdie, who has championed such brazen movements, supporting so many and inspiring many more, proves once again that the pen can be our most important weapon. Here’s to you old friend, we will keep fighting as long as we are breathing. Please read the various contributions from so many writers and voices - link in bio 🙏🏽❤️ #indiaat75 #partitionday #independenceday #india #democracry #peninternational
