What’s something that feels dangerous to you? Is it performing in front of a camera or audience? Being vulnerable to another person? Or just physically removing a layer of clothing? What if I told you burlesque is all three at the same time? Yes, part of the appeal is good old-fashioned striptease, but if you dig deeper into burlesque history or talk to current performers, you’ll find that for many, the physical strip becomes a metaphor for shedding layers of oppression, emotion, baggage, walls, barriers, anything keeping you down or blocking you from reaching your full potential. Burlesque has a rich history of subverting expectations, reclaiming narratives, and challenging societal norms. But these themes can also be explored on a personal level, shaking up your dancing and belief system all at once. What story are you going to tell?
