Karri and her dad in the dim reflection of a foggy glass, sharing a few hugs and tears on her wedding morning. I took this photo straight on, in full focus and clarity, with less artistic flair. It’s a great photo, a technically better photo. But this perspective is the one that feels more true to me. This is what relationships are –– unclear reflections of what we imagine they could be. More complex and layered than they might be in a perfect world. The beauty of it is that through the mess and uncertainty, love always shines through and connectedness becomes the focal point. This could feel like a surprising statement (unless you’ve dated me lolol) but I’m obsessed with perfection in real life. If something can’t meet the expectations of my specific meticulous vision, I’m quick to discard it. Photography has become my practice for resting into the beauty of imperfection. I can see it so clearly in the identities and relationships of the people who step in front of my lens; I’m slower to see the beauty of it in myself and my own relationships. So here’s to learning and growing and practicing what I preach✨
