And tell her she can do anything. Hold her hand on the way to her first day of school, squeeze it tightly and say, “you are going to be great”. Hold her tight when she navigates another child at school telling her she’s not great - that she’s not wearing the right trainers; that she’s not hanging with the right boys. Give her space to learn, to grow, to fail and then pick her up again saying, once more, “you can do anything, be anything”. Decorate her porridge with a smiley face when she is down and weighed by all there is to learn, all there is to be. Celebrate, commiserate, congratulate. Then watch her dream - which has become a reality after years of ABCs, GCSEs, A-levels, mild bullying, perhaps, holiday jobs in local pubs and relentless application processes - of being anything get crushed the minute she has a baby. 54,000 pregnant women get made redundant every year in the UK due to discrimination and inflexibility. Let our sons see their children - pick them up from nursery; apply calamine lotion to their chicken pox; parent. And let our daughters do the same. Only then will things be equal. When the burden of childcare is equal. Only then will we stop seeing irksome headlines like, “why are there so few women smashing through glass ceilings?” It’s simply because we are not there. #flexappeal 📷 @alex_cameron **Please check out my friend and one of the most unrelenting and brilliant charities @pregnant_then_screwed. Listen to her episode on @dirtymotherpukka in my bio on what you can do right now to change this narrative.**
