Today, Montréal-based Gabrielle Shonk (@gabrielleshonk) releases "Aftertaste", a new single where she ponders her relationship to partying as a way to cope with the pressures of life. Over animated synths, Shonk soulfully sings of the depressive cycle that comes with binge drinking: “I said I’d only have a few / Once again I’m letting myself down / Surviving off these toxic fumes / I cross the line until I drown”. The track was co-written with Mathieu Sénéchal (@matsenechal) and Peter Shonk, Gabrielle’s blues musician father.
Shonk's sophomore album is due in early 2023. The spellbinding full-length arrives in the wake of two splits—one romantic, and one creative with the major label behind Shonk’s debut. Shonk emerges with a refreshed creative freedom, which she powerfully wields alongside longtime friends and collaborators, co-writer Jessy Caron (@onclejazz) of the band @menitrust and producer @jessemaccormack. The eleven-track record chronicles the big and small feelings of heartache, and the hope that comes with endings and new beginnings.
This January, Montréal-based singer-songwriter Gabrielle Shonk will head to the road for a run of tour dates across North America. Link in bio for full tour dates, and to enjoy the single.
