"We were on a camping trip in Idaho, and Olivia had some petechiae on her arm, which is a bluish-colored rash. It was super hot out and the people we were with said maybe it could be heat rash. My gut said it was something else. I took a picture and sent it to our pediatrician. We were driving home the next day when the pediatrician responded and was like, 'If you're not already back in Portland, you should go to an urgent care. Otherwise, bring her right in.' So we did. They did blood work, and the next day they told us to go straight to the children's hospital. It was 24 hours from when we noticed the rash to getting the diagnosis of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). She was diagnosed one month shy of her fourth birthday. Olivia has received 22 transfusions so far. In the beginning, she needed transfusions because her counts were so low from cancer. Within a month of her treatment starting, she's been in what they consider remission, and relatively cancer-free. We were doing all these different things to give back (in honor of those who helped us), but when it came to her transfusions, I wanted to get the word out that this is a pretty easy way to help support people like Olivia. I was signing up to donate one day and saw something about hosting a blood drive. The first blood drive we hosted had a great turnout. It felt so good to know that Olivia's message had reached so many people. 46% of our donors were first-time donors, which is a huge number of people to come out for the first time. Birthdays are special for Olivia because it means she made it another year. We decided to have a birthday-themed blood drive to celebrate her fifth birthday. The Red Cross helped by providing balloons and cupcakes for the snacks after people gave blood. It was really fun to put that spin on it! You don't realize there are people who need transfusions for life-sustaining disorders or diseases. You don't understand how much blood is needed on a regular basis." For families like Olivia's, blood is the most precious need for treatment. Their experience is what inspired them to host regular blood drives in their community. ❤️ #StoriesThatInspire
