Until we’re all free to celebrate pride, we have more work to do.
For so many, the simple act of celebrating pride is impossible. In 70 countries, same-sex intimacy is criminalized, and in 37, Trans people face criminalization. In many others, LGBTQI+ people face persecution and violence.
Here’s what this looks like around the world:
AFGHANISTAN
LGBTQI+ Afghans are at severe risk of persecution, violence and imprisonment at the hands of the Taliban. 4,500 have reached out to Rainbow Railroad.
Help them get to safety by visiting safewayout.ca
UKRAINE
As the invasion of Ukraine continues, LGBTQI+ people - especially those not able to flee the country - are at risk and are internally displaced.
MEXICO
At the U.S.-Mexico border, LGBTQI+ people are routinely and unjustly detained and imprisoned while seeking asylum in the United States - including under continued enforcement of Title 42 Legislation.
UGANDA
As recently as May 2021, Ugandan officials continue to push legislation that criminalizes LGBTQI+ individuals, same-sex intimacy, sex work, and gender affirming care.
JAMAICA
Jamaican LGBTQI+ people face homophobic and transphobic violence on an almost daily basis, and continue to face legal and social persecution. In Jamaica, locations of Pride celebrations are not disclosed for safety.
–
At Rainbow Railroad, we see requests for help from individuals in these countries - and so many others - every single day.
While we celebrate this month, we must remember that Pride remains a protest for people fighting for equality.
