happy moon festival 🌙🌙🌙 today marks the beginning of Mid Autumn Festival (a three day* festival arguably just as celebrated as lunar new year) which honors the full moon to pray for a peak fall harvest, and to celebrate (as legend has it) Chang'e — the moon goddess of immortality. With many versions of variations of the story, our fave is the one where moon goddess drinks an elixir of immortality to prevent it from getting in the hands of her enemies, and the elixir sends her to the moon forever (thereby leaving the love of her life, hou yi) to become the spirit of the moon forever. Alina asked me yesterday how to translate Chang'e into English for her classmates but I couldn’t think of one other than Chang’e and moon goddess. I mentioned how there might be kids at her school who don’t know who Chang’e is or what moon festival either is, so we talked about how not all cultures celebrate the same holiday and why it’s important to listen and learn to others.
