Photo and text by @marcuswestbergphotography // Though it wasn’t a great session for photography - grey, drizzly and somewhat hazy - it was still quite something to see an entire family of Grauer’s gorillas climb a fig tree. Also, it’s not every day you get peed on by a silverback gorilla. Luckily more of a tinkle than a flood, and as there was rain in the air, I was already wearing a waterproof jacket. Mountain gorillas also climb trees, but not to the extent that Grauer’s gorillas do; it is not uncommon to find an entire group of the latter, including fully grown males, high above the ground. Often overshadowed by mountain gorillas, primarily because they are only found in the less-straightforward-to-visit DR Congo (and were not the subject of Dian Fossey’s work, or the movie Gorillas in the Mist), Grauer’s gorillas are marginally larger than their higher altitude cousins, but just as worthy of our attention. More, perhaps, as their future is far less certain. If you ever get the chance to visit Kahuzi-Biega National Park, I’d urge you to take it. 🦍 ____ #gorilla #silverback #africanwildlife #ilcp #ilcp_photographers @grauersgorillas #conservationphotography #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #endangeredspecies
