For my @missglobalofficial National Costume I chose a high fashion Victoria’s Secret angel style take on the Native American mythological figure ...the sacred Thunderbird. (Swipe for a fun take on my outfit!) My community, the Cherokee believe in this mythical warrior bird - and it is depicted in art as well as verbal storytelling in many tribal communities across the USA and the Americas. The Tlingit depict the Thunderbird in art and carvings as well as the Navajo in the Southwest. Although we are 500+ distinct, sovereign nations - nearly every Indigenous American group has stories and beliefs centered around the Thunderbird. The thunderbird is seen as a symbol of victory over evil and challenges. Our people believe that if you see a Thunderbird during meditation or inner work - it means that you are called out to be a war chief and lead your people in times of war. Our beliefs mean that we don’t wish for violent war - but instead look for ways to communicate and de-escalate. I see the Thunderbird as a symbol for overcoming the negative teachings of modern society - and instead returning to the ancient ways of my people. These ways include....Creating balance within myself so that I can be kind and honest with others, trying to live in harmony with nature, and fighting any sense of making myself small and not walking in purpose and confidence. I chose to embody the Thunderbird within myself. I hope she inspires you to do the same.
