Microbial Oasis at @kunstfortbijvijfhuizen 05.06–​05.09.2021 PDB Mutants is a series of works that came out of using the database of Protein Data Bank as a dataset for a GAN algorithm. The goal of the experiment was to generate synthetic but realistic looking molecular shapes that could pass for real but novel scientific models of viruses and proteins. And that would then simulate a creation of new biological stuctures, and possibly bio weapons — actual present day research fields. Unexpectedly a small percentage of the resulting models ended up looking like faces or masks. This internal bias and structure of the algorithm as if revealed a human face of both technologies behind the design of AI algorithms and bio-molecular research. These unintentional face patterns were turned into info-graphs and and a portrait gallery of what could be described as biotech industries dealing with “biological unknown unknowns” .
