Then, if you're lucky, these precious relationships organically produce newer projects that are even more meaningful and fun. @bathboystokyo is a small independent publishing project founded by designer & writer @ray_masaki . Hailing from New York but Tokyo-based, Ray created Bathboys湯 as an outlet for his playful discourse on design & culture, including his powerful book "Why is the salaryman the salaryman holding a surfboard?". We had an immediate connection with Ray, and this is the first of what we hope can be many special collaborations to come. Here is some background on the inspiration in his own words: "....right as I was falling asleep last night I thought of the words 'Radical Listening'....from Sarah Trembath - Radical listening is a term that goes by various names, such as rhetorical listening and deep listening. But in all its labels and applications, as antiracist work it gets to the same thing: in order to have successful interactions across racial and cultural realities, people must learn to listen to one another. I feel like it's an idea that really relates to both our practices....Bathboys graphics tend to have a in-the-know cheekiness to it, so the typography uses fonts that are typically seen as kinda dorky in Japan and also have some silly play on words like 湯NIVERSAL, which combines the kanji for "bath" (pronounced yu) and the word 'universal'.
