When they met at the hospital, we made sure to keep the baby in the bassinet for a while instead of me holding him when our toddler walked in. We had them exchange a little gift, and then I spent some one-on-one time with our toddler. Our toddler is the best little helper and genuinely loves being included in even the smallest tasks for the baby. He always grabs diapers and wipes for us, loves bath time with his baby brother, and is the only one allowed to push the stroller. We also make a point to NEVER BLAME THE BABY. Instead of saying, “I can’t play with you because I’m feeding the baby!” or “We can’t go to the park because the baby is sleeping!” we reframe the sentence to avoid putting blame on the baby while still setting boundaries.
