Before May was over I forgot to salute and thank you, my big brother @kardinalo while wishing you a happy belated birthday, captain. NOW I'M A SPEAK ON HIS BEHALF, MY GENERAL KARDINAL OFFISHALL.. PEOPLE PLS SAVE ALL QUESTIONS FOR AFTERWARDS... Jason is not only my brother/my teammate/one of my son's godfathers/voice and face of our "true school"/etc.. but he was and IS STILL one of our greatest leaders of all "Toronto Hip Hop" time, a true captain.. Short stories... - After Kardi took leadership of the Fresh Arts Music program (which paid us minimum wage every summer and helped launch me) in 1996ish, as the baton was passed down to him from one of our leading champion teachers, Wendy "Motion" Brathwaite @wendyinmotion, he embarked on a crusade motivated. While on the side we had recently started a new movement via @forevachase and @Johnbronski @playderecord with a single he helped me produce and perform titled "Still Caught Up". He renamed the Fresh Arts group the "Maroon Squad". ("Maroons" being escaped Jamaican slaves who found a new start in the mountains, circa yr 1500ish) So, for instance these summer undertakings would lead to a trip to New York City, "pied piper'd" by Kardi, including a couple of our now great voices @missjullyblack, @directorx to name a few. It was like 10-12 of em, he organized the trip as an 18yr oId boss. I was 17, swappin out for studio time so I couldn't go. Who knew what would come of it other than great shopping for the latest drip? One instance would be Julian Lutz, as a gifted young street poet and graphic artist, connecting with Hype Williams at Big Dawg Films.. WOW.. Thank you captain.. Another story, too many to type, but the nigga was our RZA!! THE ABBOT TO "THE CIRCLE"!!! He was able to wrangle our crew and set rehearsal schedules up for this group of kids while he was a kid himself... Many of these gigs led to us getting our first recording/publishing deals.. Thank you captain.. We'll save a bunch for the book!! I know your future holds even more, but your past is one of the greatest and has helped me become and keep striving to be the best I can be..
