Hey everyone! It's been a while, and I'm excited to reintroduce myself. I'm Michelle, a Indigenous Ecuadorian-American visual artist, art & culture critic, educator, mentor, and activist, proudly hailing from the vibrant World's Borough of Queens, NYC. Growing up in Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, I’ve been deeply shaped by the diversity and energy of our community. I’m a product of NYC public schools, having attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia for visual and fine arts and later graduating from Baruch’s Zicklin School of Business with a focus in accounting and mathematics. I also studied adolescent and childhood education at CUNY City College and Hunter College. With my background in the arts, I’m a passionate advocate for NYC’s arts and culture scene. I’m deeply committed to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion, particularly within education and the arts- even working alongside educators, researchers, chairpeople of entire graduate education departments to advocate for culturally responsive pedagogy, assisting in the preparation of a $1.4 million federal research grant to financially aid bipoc preservice teachers with graduate tuition, and summarizing as well as analyzing empirical and mathematical educational data. Being a queer Kichwa-American, and activist for mental health and human rights- I’m the type of the person to protest, call my representatives and encourage my followers too and vote!, boycott, and genuinely show up to city council meetings and hearings to fiercely speak up for my community and protect the voiceless. I use my platform to voice my concern against fascism despite institutional blacklisting and blocking and censorship as I always strive to create positive change in the world around me. Having grown up with limited resources, I understand the challenges faced by kids who aren’t encouraged to pursue their artistic passions. My dream is to create community spaces where everyone can freely artistically express themselves and feel supported.
