5 years ago, Sari and her husband Darta experienced a gentle, respectful birth of their daughter in Bali, followed by a heartbreaking loss. Then, last year, they discovered that they were expecting again– twins.
Like many pregnant people who live in underserved, rural communities, Sari and her husband would have to drive 2.5 hours to reach the nearest hospital birth setting, the mandated birth environment for all twin births in Indonesia.
But then, at 37 weeks, when Saria woke up suddenly with intense contractions.
She knew she would not be able to endure hours of travel.
In a rush, the couple hurried by motorcycle to Bumi Sehat, EMC's grantee partner who center culturally-compassionate, quality, midwife-to-mother care. Acting quickly, the on-call midwives at Bumi Sehat were able to help Sari deliver both babies safely.
During postpartum, complications arose that affected second born twin, Ketut. After four days of oxygen and IV support in the NICU, and with Sari’s continued care and feeding, Ketut’s heart issue resolved and Sari and her babies received the all clear from their pediatrician to return home, healthy and well.
Bumi Sehat offered the family a ride back to their home, up a mountain, so they could proceed with the cultural ceremonies to bless the babies and this incredible new mother.
