Prior to European contact womens attire in Hawaiiʻi consisted of a simple pa’u or skirt, made from the bark of a wauke or paper mulberry tree. Upon the arrival of missionaries a modesty movement took place in the islands and the mu’u was invented to cover up. Thankfully Fashion progressed and waists were revealed to create what in my opinion is one of the most flattering cuts out there, the Holokū. These timeless dresses were equiped with long trains and plunging backs perfect for swaying hips and royal balls. There i am in my holoku, mid cha-cha with my māmaki concoction that I fully regretted by 6pm
