The Vatican joins a global community in calling for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. Why? 🛢️The fossil fuel industry benefits from subsidies of $11m every minute even though the burning of fossil fuels is responsible for 86% of CO2 emissions. Government action has been painstakingly slow & caters too much to the reckless & deceptive fossil fuel corporations. 🌍 Scientists, heads of state, youth and parents, parliamentarians, health professionals and more are part of a growing movement that recognizes fossil fuels are the greatest contributor to climate change. Unless countries curb fossil fuel production in addition to tightening greenhouse gas emission restrictions, nations will continue to overshoot their already insufficient emissions targets. Cardinal Michael Czerny, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, said: “Regarding COP27, Pope Francis again joins scientists in holding to the Paris Agreement’s temperature increase goal of 1.5°C. The planet already is 1.2°C hotter, yet new fossil fuel projects every day accelerate our race towards the precipice. Enough is enough. All new exploration and production of coal, oil, and gas must immediately end, and existing production of fossil fuels must be urgently phased out. This must be a just transition for impacted workers into environmentally sound alternatives.
