THERE ARE REAL MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS TO BEING AN EARLY RISER, EVEN FOR NIGHT OWLS... (BUT MAKE SURE YOU GET ENOUGH SLEEP TOO) • - A new study from Zeitzer Lab @stanford.med explored whether waking up early has health benefits and indeed it does. This is true for early risers who prefer to wake up early and go to bed relatively early. It’s also true for those whose chronotype makes them want to stay up really late and sleep in. Those people should also strive to be early risers and get to bed earlier, certainly before 1 AM but earlier is probably better. - These new data are important because previously it was hypothesized that the healthiest thing to do was to obey your chronotype, but that might only be true for early risers. Of course, more studies are needed, but these are interesting data as it relates to mental health. - And of course, it’s important to live life. Many people have to do shift work or raise kids, stay up late to study, stay up late for a great party. No one is saying that isn’t OK. But ideally, it’s the exception rather than the rule, at least if health is your goal. From the study: “To age healthily, individuals should start sleeping before 1AM, despite chronobiological preferences.” - doi.org/10.1016/j.psychres.2024.115956 - Please put any questions you have in the comments section below this post and as always, thank you for your interest in science! - @hubermanlab @stanford.med @stanford - #neuroscience #science #neurociencia #ciencia #sleep #early #light #mentalhealth
