Saw palmetto comes from a palm-like plant that grows in the southeast United States. The berries of this plant have long been used in homeopathic medicine to balance hormone levels. It is known to effectively mitigate hormone induced hair loss in both males and females. Hormone induced hair loss is brought about by the several factors including the conversion of testorone into DHT. This DHT causes hair follicles to shrink and eventually results in hair loss. Given that men have more testosterone than women, men experience a receding hair line first while women experience an overall thinning in hair volume. Saw palmetto effectively stops the transformation of testorone into DHT, thus minimizing hormone related hair loss. Saw palmetto with its known impact on hormone levels is not recommended for use by pregnant women.
