"Vessels are the quintessential ancient artefact, with the amphora being one of the most mystical and alchemical in shape and form. Likewise, lava rock or basalt is the most primordial of earth’s materials forged from volcanic eruptions. Its deep black hue is raw, primal, and harkens back to the source of the planet’s transformative and violent beginnings. I wanted to forge a vessel that defied the laws of gravity; an ancient object imbued with pre-verbal, universal symbols depicting humanity’s storied relationship with our cosmos — preserved within time.” Ekstasis, 2021 Volcanic rock with black and gold-coated bronze details. 31 x 10 x 10cm Carved from volcanic rock, “Ekstasis” translates the deep, primordial blacks found throughout Viktor’s painting into sculptural form. The unique character of each piece of porous basalt makes every work unique, while the black and gold-coated bronze details that punctuate its surface draw connections to a host of archaic iconographies.
