Thank you so much @toast for featuring me and @eastsidevoices in your magazine, and to @jo_rodgers and @lizseabrook for the beautiful words and pictures. Head to Toast for the full interview. Posted @withregram • @toast BREAKFAST WITH · Helena Lee Helena Lee began East Side Voices as a series of live interviews with people of East and Southeast Asian heritage to discuss racism and identity. Over the course of the pandemic, this format changed to become a series of essays –. Helena then collated these to create a book of the same name. She found that some of the stories were more familiar, while other essays gave perspectives from experiences in cultures that were entirely new and different to her own. Helena wants people like herself to read the book, "people who don't see any of themselves in the canon of literature, or the arts or on TV." She also stresses the importance of amplifying these stories outside of the communities included, as without allies and amplification nothing will change. Jo Rodgers speaks to Helena about running East Side Voices and the personal experiences that have motivated her work. Read the full interview on the #TOASTmagazine via the link in bio.
