#MoviePass, the original pennies-for-dollars, money-incinerating subscription movie ticketing service, inevitably shut down in 2019—even before the pandemic completely shook up the box office as we knew it. Although the future of the cinema business looks increasingly bleak, co-founder and CEO Stacy Spikes is attempting a MoviePass reboot with a revamped and more realistic model to launch next month. “MoviePass can act as a kind of Hotels Tonight for theaters,” Matt Belloni writes. “In that way, [Spikes] is positioning MoviePass as more like a software solution, something theaters can use to fix a market inefficiency.” But already struggling to navigate through the streaming era, theaters and studios have their concerns about this Hollywood comeback.
