The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) turns 32 years old today!
July 26, 1990 was a historic and victorious day for the disabled community in the United States. President H.W. Bush signed the ADA into law after many years of disabled Americans advocating and fighting for their civil rights.
So what does the ADA do?
In simple terms, the law is there to protect disabled people from discrimination in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. But it is so much more than that. It gives disabled people the same rights and opportunities as non-disabled people and ensures their inclusion at every level of society.
However, we also recognize that we don’t live in a perfect world and even though these protections exist, disabled people are still fighting for true equity. The Disability Justice Movement is the reason so much progress has been made and today it is stronger than ever!
