Commander Nesrin Abdullah, a 41-year-old Kurdish woman, began organizing the Women’s Protection Unit in 2011. . . By 2015, they were 24,000 strong, composed entirely of female fighters who went on to liberate more than 50,000km of Syrian territory from ISIS. . .
