For today’s @theststyle, I wrote about the absolute sh*tshow that has been (attempting) to do up my flat over the past 18 months, and the reality of home renovation beyond the glossy Insta façade. I’ve found it really overwhelming at times, particularly as a young(ish) woman going it alone and self-funding, not to mention dealing with 🤬 builders and various other disasters. It’s been a real learning process, and one that - yet again - has forced me to reevaluate my relationship with ££, and I hope this piece is useful to anyone on the verge of buying a place, or who is trapped in renovation hell themselves and wondering why the hell it’s so bloody complicated. Not all bad news though - I think I’ve (finally) found the right people for the job, which full disclosure has involved finally recognising I’m out of my depth and hiring a designer/project manager to help me with the more practical stuff, which is apparently far more the norm in the US. Shout out to @irenettya who shared her wisdom and experiences with me for this piece (go follow @casattya for actual honest insights into the renovation process). Hoping in 6 months time all the reno work will be behind me and I can get to doing the stuff I’m ACTUALLY looking forward to.. buying nice things 😈
