During the final weeks of my training for tonight’s @utmbmontblanc race, I did something I don’t usually do. I left the big mountains (of Colorado) for the rolling hills and much smaller mountains of Pennsylvania. I did so for a few reasons. One, I was invited to speak to the Hempfield Cross Country team, my alma mater, and trying to have a positive influence on young people/runners is something that is important to me. Two, my family was going on a weekend getaway to the mountains, and they are an important part of my life that I want to prioritize and show up for. And three, I went to spend time with my 96 year old grandfather, who’s health is fading, not knowing how much time we have left.
Was it the smartest move for training? That I don’t know. The jury is still out. What I can tell you is that I think it was a smart move for myself, if nothing other than to remind myself and express to my home team that they are important to me.
So tonight as I set off on this 170km journey around Mont Blanc, I hope to carry all of those supporting me with me. And though he’ll love me no matter what, I’d love to have the kind of day that puts a big smile on my Pop-pop’s face. After all, who know’s how many of those he, or any of us, have left! Here’s to casting some smiles out there!! #homemade
